Modular builds are a Modern Method of Construction (MMC) that are able to reduce the carbon footprint of traditional construction and have improved sustainability. Modular units are manufactured in a factory-controlled environment using sustainable materials and precision engineering reduces both waste and lead time.
There is currently a modular project underway, building a new McDonald’s which is right on our office doorstep. After a successful recruitment placement by ARV, the offsite construction company involved invited two of our employees to spend a day on-site to watch the modular process step-by-step. It was a great learning opportunity, and we got some great content for an article and video that will be published soon!
Until then, we thought we’d look back and share one of our favourite local projects.
Hope Rise
ZED PODS Ltd are contractors that specialise in the design and build of offsite construction and zero-carbon modular. In 2020, ZED PODS worked in collaboration with Bristol City Council, Bristol Housing Festival, and YMCA Bristol. Together they created an affordable and energy-positive social rent housing development in Bristol called ‘Hope Rise’.
‘Hope Rise’ comprises of eleven environmentally friendly CLT homes built on a steel frame above an existing car park, which creates solutions for land, revenue, and sustainability issues, but most importantly the social housing crisis in the UK. Opening their doors to residents in 2021, the one and two-bedroomed apartments offer clean, comfortable, and safe living quarters for young people at risk of homelessness. This housing complex was the only one of its kind in the UK and is 100% socially rented, and as a community building development, it could be the future of social housing.
