What is Neom?
More than just a city, Neom will be a region spanning 10,200 square miles (26,500 sq km) in northwestern Saudi Arabia along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba. The project was launched by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of the country’s Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues.
The $500 billion in funding is being provided by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. So far, four main sub-projects within Neom have been announced:
1. The Line: A 170 km long linear city for 9 million people consisting of parallel mirrored skyscrapers
2. Oxagon: The “world’s largest floating structure” – an octagonal industrial port city on the Red Sea
3. Trojena: A 60 sq km mountain ski resort that will host the 2029 Asian Winter Games
4. Sindalah: An 840,000 sq m Red Sea island with a marina, hotels and luxury amenities
Neom is targeting an eventual population of 10 million across its various developments. The first residents are expected in 2024, with a target of 1 million inhabitants by 2030.
Design and Architecture
While many details are still under wraps, several high-profile architecture firms have been linked to Neom so far including:
- US firms Aecom, Morphosis, Pei Cobb Freed, HOK
- UK studios Zaha Hadid Architects, Adjaye Associates
- European firms UNStudio, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Mecanoo, Studio Fuksas
- Planners and designers from places like Barcelona and Australia
The master plan aims to highlight sustainability, liveability, and harmony with nature. The project seeks to push the boundaries of urban design and incorporate cutting-edge technologies throughout.
The Path Forward
Saudi Arabia is charging full speed ahead with Neom. Assuming funding holds up, the first phases could be complete by 2030 with development continuing through 2045.
However, a project of this scale is not without its challenges. Neom will need to navigate complex logistical, environmental, and social considerations as it moves forward. Ensuring the seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices will be critical to its success.
Moreover, attracting and retaining top talent from around the world will require creating a truly exceptional quality of life and fostering a culture of innovation. Neom’s leaders will need to be adaptable and proactive in addressing any obstacles that arise along the way.
